Eating fish in pregnancy can benefit you in more ways than you think

Being pregnant is a blessing. It is also a time when you are told to be extra careful about what you do, eat and drink. One of the most popularly proscribed food during pregnancy is fish and we don't disagree. Some fish can actually cause birth defects in your child and you have got to be very careful of the ones you pick from the supermarket. But then there are also the kinds that offer great many benefits.

The n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids found in fish have proven benefits that increase motor skills, which in turn increase the ability to grasp and perform physical activities.


Is a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids

Fish is the best source of omega 3 fatty acids, which can minimize and even prevent risk of preterm birth. It also reduces risk of the child developing heart diseases.


Is great for eye sight

Consumption of fish during pregnancy is good for the eye sight of the child. Surprised? Well, a fact it is.


Is a rich source of Iodine

Fish are also very rich in iodine. A woman who has fish during pregnancy transfers to her child a good share of iodine even before it is born.


Has natural minerals

When the fetus is still growing, eating fish in pregnancy can allow the child to get all the natural minerals that can be fruitful in its growth and development.

It is advisable that you avoid eating fish if you are allergic to seafood. The effect of consuming fish during the crucial phase may vary from person to person. Also, try and avoid eating large predator fish that eat other fish as they are high on mercury.
